A Monk is to be Dead to the World
A monk is to be dead to the world, for by his very vocation he is called to be set apart, living a life in imitation of the angels. Whether he be praised or offended, a monk must react as though he were a dead man. He must not be disturbed by insults, nor prideful when people praise him. In his obedience and humility, he finds beauty in a hidden life.

Genesis 2:4-19
4This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, 5before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. 8The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.
