I am abbot of All-Merciful Saviour Orthodox Monastery (ROCOR) on Vashon Island, WA. The island is a twenty minute ferry ride from West Seattle, and a fifteen minute crossing from Tacoma. Surrounded by the Salish Sea, the island is some 87% undeveloped forest, with a rural population of around eleven thousand citizens. December 15, 2021December 14, 2021 Abbot Tryphon

December 14, 2021December 13, 2021 Abbot Tryphon

The Link between the Old and New Testament Temples Orthodox temples have kept to the same form and function since ancient times. Broken

December 11, 2021December 10, 2021 Abbot Tryphon

What To Do When We’re Broken It is only human to become despondent when we have failed in keeping to our moral, ethical and spiritual standards, succumbing, instead, to temptation. Our Orthodox Faith teaches that we must be compassionate towards others, loving, quick to forgive, exemplar in our Christian living,

The Whole Person

December 10, 2021December 9, 2021 Abbot Tryphon

We Are Both Soul and Body Unlike angels, who are entirely spiritual beings, God has made each of us as creatures dwelling in a material world. To be whole, we must worship God both in body and soul. This teaching is central to our Christian faith and is an affirmation

How Our Soul Differs From That of an Animal The Orthodox Church teaches that animals have souls, although not the same as ours. When conceived, God bestows upon us the nous, which distinguishes us from the other animals. It is the nous that is the eye of the soul, intelligent

Walking Together

December 7, 2021December 6, 2021 Abbot Tryphon

Walking Towards the Kingdom, Together I recently heard a wonderful story of a group of African children who were assembled before a large basket of fresh fruit. They were told that the first child who could reach the basket could have all the fruit for themselves. The Western adults who
