Young priest dies in car accident

Father Matthew Baker, a priest of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, died suddenly following the Sunday of Orthodoxy Vespers. He lost control of his car driving on snowy roads while traveling with his 6 children. While the children were miraculously unharmed, Father Matthew was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Father Matthew had only just been ordained a year ago in January and only just recently been assigned to a parish in Norwich, Connecticut. He will be remembered as an extremely compassionate priest, with a scholarly mind, and a servant’s heart. He leaves behind his beautiful wife of 13 years, Presbytera Katherine and their 6 children (Isaac, Elias, George, Eleftheria, Cyril, and Matthew, Jr.), ages 12 to 2. Please remember them in your prayers.

Memory eternal, O Lord, grant unto Thy servant, the Priest Matthew.

Isaiah Called to Be a Prophet

6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one cried to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!”

4 And the posts of the door were shaken by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

5 So I said:

“Woe is me, for I am undone!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King,
The Lord of hosts.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a live coal which he had taken with the tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth with it, and said:

“Behold, this has touched your lips;
Your iniquity is taken away,
And your sin purged.”

“Whom shall I send,
And who will go for Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people:

‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand;
Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’

10 “Make the heart of this people dull,
And their ears heavy,
And shut their eyes;

And return and be healed.”

11 Then I said, “Lord, how long?”

“Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant,
The houses are without a man,

5 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. Proverbs 6:3-20

3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;
For you have come into the hand of your friend:

The Folly of Indolence

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,

Overseer or ruler,

And gathers her food in the harvest.

When will you rise from your sleep?

The Wicked Man

12 A worthless person, a wicked man,
Walks with a perverse mouth;
13 He winks with his eyes,
He shuffles his feet,
He points with his fingers;
14 Perversity is in his heart,
He devises evil continually,
He sows discord.
15 Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly;
Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

16 These six things the Lord hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
17 A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,
19 A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

Beware of Adultery

20 My son, keep your father’s command,
And do not forsake the law of your mother.
