And Our Parishes Are Not Ethnic Enclaves
“The unity of the Church overcomes all barriers and frontiers, including racial, linguistic and social differences. The message of salvation is to be proclaimed to all nations in order to bring them into one fold, to unite them by the power of faith and the grace of the Holy Spirit (Mt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15; Acts 1:8).”
These words were officially released by the Moscow Patriarchate. They are important, for they not only reflect the teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ, but are Patriarchal instructions for how we should live our lives as Orthodox Christians, and how our parishes should function. In issuing this directive, the Russian Church has proclaimed the truth of our faith, and that we are the Church Catholic (universal,) and not simply for Russians.
When we make our parishes into ethnic enclaves, and set up language, and social barriers for anyone who might walk in the door, we fail in following Christ’s commandment, to “go into all the world, making disciples of every nation.” Hording the Faith for ourselves, and our “tribe,” and failing to seek out our neighbors, with the salvific message of Christ’s Church, and welcoming them into the fold, goes against everything the Church has stood for, since Her foundation.
