As Christians We Need to Impart Christ’s Love to Others
Several years ago I was sitting in a Seattle coffee house, laptop open, working on correspondence. Two young college-age men were sitting at a table about two feet away. One of them made a rude remark that was obviously meant for my ear. He suggested to his friend that only a stupid old man would believe in God. I smiled at them and continued to work on my laptop.
Before leaving the café, I purchased two gift cards and asked the barista to give them to the two young men sitting at the table next to mine, but only after I left.
About two weeks later I visited the same café, and found the same two young men sitting at a table by the window. As I seated myself at a back table, they both came over and asked if they could sit with me for a moment. I smiled broadly and said I would be delighted to have them join me. One of the young men then asked me why I’d purchased gift cards for them, since I’d obviously heard his nasty comment about me.
I told them that God had told me to buy them the cards, and that the gifts were from God. One of the young men teared up and asked for my forgiveness. I told him I’d forgiven him the very moment he’d uttered those words because Christ loved them. How could I not love them if God loved them, I asked?
God offers us abundant chances to show His love for other people, and sometimes the most unlovable that come into our presence are the very ones who need our love the most.

John 10:9-16

Comfort in Suffering
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds through Christ. 6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Hebrews 7:26-8:226 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. 28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
The New Priestly Service
8 Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.
Matthew 5:14-19
14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Christ Fulfills the Law
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Thank-you for being a messenger of God’s love and forgiveness. Your example is a wonderful reminder to not respond in our human nature, especially now when the country is so divided, but respond with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit. May the seeds of hope you planted with your generous action grow and become strong. They will know we are Christians by our Love.
