The cure of a wounded heart is found in God’s mercy

There is a common misconception concerning the word “mercy”, used throughout the liturgical services of the Church, as well as our private prayers, and the Jesus Prayer. It is a given that we are all sinners, but the asking for God’s mercy is not limited to asking His forgiveness, or begging God to overlook our sinfulness. When we pray forty Lord have mercies, we are recognizing that EVERYTHING proceeds out of God’s mercy. The air we breath, the health we enjoy, the food on our table, the water in our tap, the friendships we treasure, our family, and everything good, flows out upon us through God’s mercy.

Our lives as Christians begin with a wounded heart, and it is through the healing power of the “hospital of the soul”, the Orthodox Church, that our hearts are made whole. God’s mercy is the very foundation of our Orthodox faith, and is the Liturgical services of the Church help us become aware that our Lord is not a stern judge, but a merciful father, Who, like the father of the prodigal son, welcomes us back from the far country.

Divine mercy lays the foundation for the Orthodox teaching on synergy, as we are invited to co-operate with God in our salvation. The Holy Mysteries (sacraments) of the Church, together with the disciplines as prescribed by the Church, bring about the restoration of spiritual health, and we are transformed by the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Christ.

He Is Risen

Matthew 21:33-42

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

33 “Hear another parable: There was a certain landowner who planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built a tower. And he leased it to vinedressers and went into a far country. 34 Now when vintage-time drew near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers, that they might receive its fruit. 35 And the vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed one, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did likewise to them. 37 Then last of all he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But when the vinedressers saw the son, they said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his inheritance.’ 39 So they took him and cast him out of the vineyard and killed him.

40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vinedressers?”

41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”

42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures:

‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the Lord’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?

    “A mercy of peace a sacrifice of praise!’ Why is this phrase used in the Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom at the Offertory, amidst all the supplications and prayer for mercy, and the Lord have mercy’s contained at various places during this Liturgical Service?

    Why is your Monastery called: All-Merciful Savior?

    The cure of a wounded heart is found in God’s mercy! I love the French meaning of “Mercy” . It is “miséricorde”! God pouring out His Heart upon human and personal misery!
