Stop Complaining!

Complaining is in opposition to the message of the Gospels

A bad attitude has the ability to keep us from growing spiritually, and can even impact the way we live, and hurt those around us. It is therefore important that we learn to keep a positive attitude, for negative thinking will not make anything better. Complaining is in opposition to the message of the Gospels.

Saint Paisios of Mount Athos told us, “we must always be careful and constantly question the nature of our thoughts.  When someone is preoccupied and trusts his own way of thinking, he becomes vulnerable to the devil, who is capable of transforming us into sly persons, even when we are honest by nature”.

Both positive and negative thoughts have the ability to limit our spiritual growth if they are based on the ego and self-will. Thus, many Church fathers counseled against using positive thinking as a basis of spiritual self-help, since the spiritual aim of a Christian must be to align our will with the will of God.

Yet, Saint Paisios does say that initially our positive thoughts can be helpful in leading us to God. We must remember that God asks us to be humble, and to let go of our self-centeredness and our pride. Although our journey into the Heart of God must begin with positive thoughts, it is only in having gained a humble and contrite heart, that God will flood our soul with life-transforming grace, and it is by His grace that we will be saved.

Matthew 11:27-30

27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Jesus Heals a Great Multitude

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude sought to touch Him, for power went out from Him and healed them all.

“Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be filled.
Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall laugh.
22 Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.
