I was watching your video tonight (The Church as Hospital) – after my prayers and reading of the Saints. I thought it was profound and you touched on something that sparked in my mind from tonight’s reading of the Prologue of Ohrid. The Homily discussed Isaiah 1:2, however I read all of chapter 1 and found our current country/ world challenges in that reading. It is truly tragic that from Adam until the current day we continue to forget the very thing that breathed life into each of us – without which we would be nothing – and that is God. The very God who bought humankind out of destruction so many times over the millennia and yet we forget the bigger picture. While it is sad to see so many fall through the trap of evil via selfishness, anger, petulance on others, or any other kind of sin, I am always heartened by the gifts that God gives us each day – not the least of which is to wake up and offer thankfulness.
I spent last year reading the whole Bible and was inspired yet humbled by the things that we do or don’t do for our creator.
Appreciate your thoughts and encouragement…another tremendous work, which you may already be familiar with:
Therapy of Spiritual Illness: An Introduction to the Ascetic Tradition of the Orthodox Church (3vols)
by Dr Jean-Claude Larchet (available through Alexander Press )
Psychotherapy, in context of Orthodox theology, is truly SOUL HEALING
Father Bless!
As a mental health provider I am often faced with prescribing medication and providing therapy to the broken. Some of my clients are children or adolescents who have been traumatized by abusive and/or neglectful adults, while others are adults who have suffer from domestic violence and/or substance abuse. Truly it is the prayers of others and the power of Christ that saves them, my medications and therapy are simply tools for our Holy Father. May it be blessed!
I’m glad I’m old – not raising kids, etc. Thank you for this talk. You are spot on!
